The 2010 Commonwealth Games are the 19th edition of the Common Wealth Games which are scheduled to be held between 3 October and 13 October 2010 in New Delhi, the capital city of India. It will be the biggest multi-sports event conducted in New Delhi and India with athletes and sportsmen from 72 countries in 17 events. India has earlier hosted the Asian Games in the years of 1951 and 1982. The Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi will be conducted first time in India. It will be also the second time the event has been conduced in Asia after 1998 Commonwealth Games held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In the year of 2008, India has hosted 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games in the city of Pune, Maharashtra. The Youth Games offered nine sports i.e. Table Tennis, Tennis, Athletics, Boxing, Badminton, Swimming, Shooting, Weightlifting and Wrestling. 2010 Common Wealth Games will conduct 17 sport events. They are Aquatics, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Table Tennis, Tennis, Boxing, Wrestling, Weightlifting, Cycling, Gymnastics, Shooting, Squash, Netball, Rugby 7s, Lawn Bowls, and Hockey. Organizing committee of 2010 Commonwealth Games All information about the 2010 Commonwealth Games can be obtained from the Office of Organizing Committee in Connaught Place. The office is a nine-storey building, built by the NDMC - New Delhi Municipal Council. The office is in front of Jantar Mantar. Preparation & Infrastructure for 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi New Delhi is getting ready to host the big event of Commonwealth Games 2010. To get ready to for the vast arrival of tourists visiting New Delhi, India Government has taken several steps to improve the city. Government is working for city beautification, excellent transportation system, more parking spaces, better traffic management system, world class health care system, tight security system, world class accommodation facilities, and upgrading old structures. To give excellent and convenient transportation, many high capacity modern buses has been launched, roads have been improved, Delhi Metro has been expanded, airports have been modernized & improved, new flyovers have been built, transit systems have been improved, express ways have been built, and many other facilities for the guests. Arrangements of utmost protection for the visitors along with their comfort are being done with the Government of Delhi and India. India is planning to set up special police force called “Tourist Police” before the beginning of big events of Commonwealth Games 2010. Private security agencies also will be assigned to make sure full proof safety & protections of the guests & visitors coming on India tours during the games. Special Task Forces (STFs), monitoring systems, and Call interception systems are being set in various places of Delhi for the responsibility of providing tight security for visitors. Common Wealth Games Village Games Village is built on the eastern banks of Yamuna River near Akshardham Temple in Delhi for the big events of Commonwealth Games 2010. The village will provide a wonderful accord between the warmth of culture, tradition, hospitality and comfort of modern facilities. It will provide world-class accommodation facilities for the athletes, sportsmen and team of officials. The game village will also house apartments, health & fitness centres, relaxing counters, training areas, and zones of fun & activities. Many other facilities will be also provides within close proximity and popular landmarks of New Delhi, India. Motto and Symbols Representing the Event of CWG 2010 The mascot of the mega event of CWG 2010 will be Shera. Shera symbolized courage, power and splendor of India. A spiraling image is the logo of CWG 2010. The logo is inspired by the Chakra which is the symbol of freedom, power and unity. The logo spirals upwards. It represents the growth and proves peopling coming in mutual harmony. Bright colors have been used to design logo. It represents highlights of vivacious India and its journey to tradition to modernity. “Come Out and Play” is the tagline of the logo.
