Fairs of MaharashtraMaharashtra is a land of diverse culture and religion. The three regions, Konkan, Maharashtra, and Vidarbha have their own distinct culture and festivals. Maharashtrians enjoy each fair and festival with equal ecstasy and endeavor. As in other parts of the country, fairs in Maharashtra are centers of trade and religion. Many fairs are also organized by Maharashtra government. Elephanta Festival Elephanta festivals are held in January every year by Maharashtra tourism department. Elephanta is located on a small island near to Mumbai. The island harbors a large statue of elephant and temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The festival is a caboodle of art, culture, and classical music. The festival is a preservatory and showcase of the rich culture and heritage of the state. Ganesh Chaturthi Ganesh Chaturthi is the key festival of Maharashtra. The festival is celebrated on Shukla Chaturthi in August lasting for 10 days. Lord Ganesh the elephant headed son of Lord Shiva is said to be the god of wisdom and source of good luck and prosperity. On the auspicious day idol of Lord Ganesh are worshipped and then immersed in the water on the last day of celebration. Modern way of the ceremony in public was started by freedom fighter Bal Bangadhar Tilak in order to unite people on large scale. Banaganga Festival A cultural show accompanied by fair is held in January every year at Banganga. Top artistes from all over the country perform classical music concerts here. The festival is attended by people from all over the world. According to myths Lord Ram stopped on the hillock of Malabar Hill. Lord Ram shot an arrow ‘Ban’ in the earth and as a result fresh water ‘Ganga’ flowed from the earth. The water quenched the thirst of the residing people. Ellora Festival Ellora festival is celebrated at Ellora caves site near Aurangabad district. The caves are witness to evolution of Jain and Buddhist religions. Renowned artists of dance and music come to the place to be a part of the glory by their performance. Kumbh Mela Kumbh Mela is the most famous fair and Hindu spiritual gathering in India. It is organized after every 12 years on the same place. In Maharashtra, fair is organized in Trimbakeshwar, Nashik. Kumbh Mela is a massive affair attended by nearly four million pilgrims.
