Punjab is demarcated by its colorful and energetic culture. The fairs and festivals of Punjab are mirror to these qualities. In Punjab, every time is a time for celebration. In Punjab, fairs and festivals mean enjoyment, dance, music and delicious food.

Lohri
Lohri is very famous festival of Punjab. The festival is celebrated on the eve of winter solstice. But now it is celebrated on the last day of the month of Bikrami calendar. The festival coincides with Makarsankranti and hence its origin is blurred. Punjabis celebrate Lohri by dancing and singing around a bon-fire at night. The day is marked by eating of ‘til’, sesame seeds and ‘rirohi’, jaggery made sweets.

Baisakhi
Baisakhi marks beginning of a new solar year and harvesting of Rabi crops. People take bath and pray in the gurudwara on the occasion. Baisakhi is a religious day to Sikhs as the Khalsa were founded today by Guru Govind Singh. In the day people take procession in remembrance of Panj Pyaras. Punjabis wear new clothes, dance and enjoy the festival.

Guru Govind Singh Jayanti
Day of 22nd December is celebrated as birthday of Guru Govind Singh. The guru was tenth of the Sikh gurus. He was born in Patna, Bihar. He fought the Mughals for his lifetime. The credit of militarization of the Sikhs goes to him. He founded the Khalsa among the Sikhs and directed the Sikhs living style.

Hola Mohalla Anandpur Sahib
Hola Mohalla is a festival of mock fight held at Anand Pur, the capital of Sikhs during older times. Hola Mohalla is a something like a military parade done during the month of February. Participants display tent pegging, standing erect on two speeding horses, bareback horse riding, and weapon handling. Traditional food is served at the end of the day.

Chandigarh Garden Festival
Chandigarh is the business capital of Punjab. The state has various botanical gardens housing variety of Rose flowers. Rose festival is held every year in March to showcase the variety of roses in the capital city.

Amritsar International Festival
The international festival is organized in the city to popularize the art and culture of the world in the world. Artists from all over the world accompanied by performers from Punjab take part in the festival. Punjab Cultural Promotion Council (PCPC) is responsible for organizing the mega event.

Baba Sodal Mela
The fair is organized on 14th of Bhado month in Jalandhar district. Historically a boy forcibly drowned himself in order to obey his mother. The fair is attended by Sikhs who consider the occasion a sacred one.

Baba Bakala
Baba Bakala is a holy pilgrimage spot for Sikhs. While his death, Guru Har Kishan Singh said that his successor can be found in Bakala. Following some miracle Teg Bahadur was honored as the 9th guru. Sikhs visit here to pay homage to Guru Harkishan Singh and the ninth Guru of Sikhs Guru Teg Bahadur. It is celebrated on the day of Raksha Bandhan in March.

Chhapaar Mela
The fair is celebrated in the month of September in Chhapaar, Ludhiana. The devotees propitiate Guga Pir, who is assumed as god of snakes. The visitors dig ground seven times so that the Pir will come to protect them.

Harballabh Sangeet Sammelan, Devi Talab, Jalandhar
The national fair was started by Baba Harballabh in the memory of his Guru Swami Tulja Giri. Both of the personalities were great classical singers and musicians. Reputed singers and musicians attend the fair. The fair will complete its 135th anniversary in 2011.

Martyrs - Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru Fair
Martyrs Fair is held at the site of the memorial of the three freedom fighters at Ferozepur on 23rd March every year. The freedom enjoyed by us today is accredited to these martyrs.

Mukatsar Maghi Fair
Mukatsar Maghi fair is held to commemorate the 40 Muktas who fought bravely and sacrificed their life in the battle of Khidrana in Punjab. The fair is held on the occasion of Makar Sankranti on 13th and 14th January every year.

Prof. Mohan Singh Mela, Ludhiana
The Mela gets its name from Mohan Singh who was a renowned writer. This is a distinctive fair attended by many Punjabi artists, writers and folk performers. Noted writers and artists are honored for their contribution to Punjabi literature, language and culture.
