About Assam
Assam is derived from Sanskrit word ‘Asoma’ meaning superior. In ancient time Assam was called Pragjyotishpur and Kamarupa. It was ruled by Ahom kings in the medieval period. In spite of many attacks on the region, the Mughal kings were not able to succeed.

Assam, the gateway to north-east India, is a hilly area with river Bramhaputra flowing through it. It is also called land of Red River and Blue Mountain. Assam has secluded serene beauty of snooty hills, green woods and vast river.

Best time for Assam tourism is between months of October and March when the temperature is moderate and rainfall is meek.

Because of its ancient history and natural wealth Assam has numerous places suitable for holiday or pilgrimage tourism.

Kamakhya Temple : Kamakhya Temple is situated on the Nilanchal Hill, 8 km from Guwahati city. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya. According to Hindu mythology, burnt body part of goddess Parvati felt here while Lord Shiva was holding her. The place is famous seat for tantra.

Sibsagar : Shibsagar is famous for its ancient Shiv temples and ruins of Ahom kingdom.

Hajo : Hajo is a sacred place visited by Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus. Hayagriva Madhav temple is situated here, where some belive that Buddha died. The place has also Pao Mecca mosque built by prince of Iran who visited the place in 1200 AD.

Navagrah Temple : It is located on Chitarchal hill, believed to be the site of old city of Pragjyotishpur. Inside the temple there are nine lingas representing the nine planets on which astronomy is based.

Kaziranga National Park : It is situated on the bank of river Branhmaputra and has an area of 430 Km squares. The tall grasses of the park make it a perfect place for the famous one-horned rhinoceros.

Manas Natinal Park : This Park is declared as a world heritage as it is home to some of the rare species of wildlife animals like tiger, langur, red panda, hispid hare, and many other birds.

Majuli Island : This is the world largest river island located in Bramhaputra River. It is also a sacred place for Hindus as 22 Vaishnavaite monasteries which act as a preservation center for Assamese art and culture started in 1500 AD.
Basistha Ashram: It is situated at a distance of 11 km from Guwahati and is believed to be the home of sage Basistha.

Sulakuchi : It is place where the famous Assam Silk clothes are weaved.

Other Places : Other places of interest in Assam are Garam Pani wild life sanctuary, Pani Dihing Bird sanctuary, Janardan temple, Umananda temple and state museum.

Railways : Guwahati is the largest railway station of Assam with trains to almost every part of India.
Roadways : Assam is well connected to other places by road.
