Kodaikanal Hill StationAbout Kodaikanal Kodaikanal, meaning ‘gift of forests’ in Tamil, is located in Tamil Nadu. Paliyan and Pulyan were early tribes who resided this place. Kodaikanal was developed as hill resort by the British in around 1845, to escape from the scorching heat of the Sun. Kodaikanal, one of the most visited tourist hill spot in Tamil Nadu, is located on Pali hills. Interesting Tourist Spots in Kodaikanal There are multiple tourist spots in the serene and peaceful hilly region. Kodaikanal Lake, Fairy Falls, Kurinji flower, and Coaker’s Walk are some of them. Kodaikanal Lake : This star shaped lake is one of the most visited sights of the hill station. The lake was converted from a marshy land by then collector of Madurai, Sir Vere Hendry Levinge. The lake also gives boating facility to the tourists. Solar Observatory : The 75 years old and one of three solar observatories in the world is situated at a distance of 3.2 km from the Kodaikanal Lake. Coaker’s Walk : This road has a stretch of 1 kilometer from the lake, passing through green surroundings and wooded slopes of the hill. It got its name from Lt. Coaker who prepared the map of Kodaikanal. Kurinji Andavar Temple : This temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan is a famous pilgrimage. It is located at a distance of 3 kilometers from the lake. The famous Kurinji flower (Strobilanthus Kunthanus) that takes flower once in 12 years can be seen here. The flower was last seen in 2004. Shenbaganur Museum : The museum located at a distance of 5.6 Km from the lake, incorporates things of archeological importance and more than 300 species of Orchids. The museum is run under Sacrade Heart College. Dolmel Circle : Dolmel Circle is famous for its pre- historic remains. It was home and burial place for people around 7000 years ago in Stone Age. Thalaiyar Falls : This is widest and highest fall in the country with a stretch of 13 km and height of 975 feet. It is also known as Rat Tail Fall. Other Places : Other Places of interest as picnic spots are Berijam Lake, Chettiyar Park, Bear Shola Park, Dolphins Nose and Silver Cascade.
