Matheran is a splendid tourists spot at a distance of 108 kilometers from Mumbai. Metharan meaning ‘Forest on Top’ is a hilly area full of splendid scenic spots. Matheran Toy train starts from Neral which lies on Mumbai - Pune line, and terminates at Matheran. The train was launched in 1907 by business man Abdul Hussain.

The 90 minutes long journey commences from Neral at 08.40 AM, 11.00 AM and 3.00 PM. The return journey from Matheran begins at 1.10 PM, 2.35 PM, and 3.45 PM. The train covers a maximum of 12 miles allowing the passengers to drench in the beautiful surroundings.

The one and a half hour journey keeps the passengers hypnotized by the mesmerizing beauty of the place. The scaling up of gradient starts near the Hardar Hills. The road and the train route come closer at Jamnapatti railway station. The roads part again and meet at Bhekra Kund. In the way venders climb on the train to sell and again jump down after the process. It is an interesting thing to watch this exercise. The tourist can buy soft drinks, oranges and snacks from them.

The short Matheran trip has got one tunnel also, interestingly named as “One Kiss Tunnel”. The beautiful horse shoe shape embark at the side attracts the attention of the tourists. The quite and peaceful area of Matheran is unpolluted as the area is free of vehicles. Parking of all the vehicles is at Dastura Naka on the border of the hill station.
